April 19, 2008 - I am interested in your view of the new Town Center. I see some good things about it, but I also see problems if it is not developed properly. Also, I am interested in your outlook on the Drug Problems with our Children in Sammamish. Let me know your views. Thanks Stan Gunno February 12, 2008: I attended a Study Session tonight and like Council Member Whitten, I was frustrated. The Open Study Session topic was “East Lake Sammamish Parkway Design Alternatives”. The session was about what type of plants are we going to plant and what are the walls we are going to build look like.
Not what Council Member Whitten and I thought it was going to be about. It looks like the City Manager’s plan to press with limited changes is a phenomenon that I do not understand. The only design changes we the citizens will see are: The types of plantings, not if we need plantings; Or how the walls will look, not if we can reduce the number of walls we need; Or one that is coming up “The shapes of the sidewalks”, not if we need sidewalks that no one will use. Council Member Cross did not seem happy that no one supported the idea of planting trees to block the view of people who live on the Eastside of the Parkway. He wanted trees next to the sidewalk that goes nowhere. The City needs to spend the money to fix true safety issues on the Parkway and spend the excess funds somewhere else to improve the lives of the citizens.
The arrogance of some of our City Council Members does not stop. If it had been a one time incident maybe I could understand it. There is a history with this Council Member having a problem with citizens who disagree with her. The original of the e-mail string below, was sent by a voter and wanted to know if the Candidates would treat the constituents. I signed the petition mentioned, so I must be a liar and obstructionist. The "An Apology and Explanation" in the Sammamish Review on Feb 6, 2008 does not hold water with me until I hear "I am sorry for calling you a liar and obstructionist." Spelling errors in the email are not mine. Interesting reading. At 04:15 PM 10/17/2007, From (Fellow Citizen I suppressed the;name) wrote:
If you are elected to Sammamish City Council, I'm curious to know if you plan to refer to any of your constituents as "liars" or "obstructionists". I'm also curious to know your position on the First Amendment right to petition. My vote will depend on it. This is in reference to: http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/soaringeaglepark/index.html

Laurie and Saddle Club Members: DON'T SIGN THIS PETITION...IT'S A LIE! I KNOW THE TRUTH. I have been working on this transfer for four years! The Friends of Soaring Eagle are not friends they are obstructionists and they don't tell you the truth. The city iof Sammamish plans to develop only these 30 acres out of 640 into a Gateway park. The park would have horse trailer parking, bathrooms, trail head map and information, picnic shelters and some active recreation....to be determined through a full public process after the transfer! This is not the first bite out of the park....it's the only bite! The way the land was orginally purchased means it has to stay in natural setting with trails because it was purchased with Conservation Easement money. The city has already added to it's border with our Beaver Lake Preserve of 57 acres and also with the purchase of the Kipper property (15 acres) to allow legal access from W. Beaver Lake Road. Once the transfer happens, there will be a full Master planning process where all the user groups will get to have a say in what they want to happen on this 30 acres! Yes, there probably will be some sports fields but 30 acres is a large area. At Eastlake H.S. and Skyline H.S. we build a 3 acres and 5 acres active sports area...and I think something like this would fit there too and not take away from the other users groups because the remaining acreage is in trails. I would like to see this trail network improved so it doesn't get so muddy. If any of you have seen what we just did with Ebright Creek Park with only 12 acres you would be amazed how wonderful we could make this 30 acres and have something for everyone. I am tired of riding in this park and not have a place to go to the bathroom. I don't want another mountain biker to come zooming down the trail while I am peeing and trying to hold my horse!!!
There is an opportunity for everybody to get something. It's not fair to have to know somebody to learn how to enjoy this park. It needs to have a welcoming front door so other county users can find it too.
DON'T SIGN THIS PETITION. I WOULD BE HAPPY TO GIVE YOU THE FACTS...I KNOW THEM... Michele Petitti, City Council of Sammamish and FOUNDER OF THE SAMMAMISH SADDLE CLUB!!!!

The City Council has voted to continue with the $45 million plus East Lake Sammamish project without looking into valuable alternatives. The City Council decided to start the 12 year plus project without completing the 244th project. I have no idea where the traffic will go while the East Lake Sammamish construction takes place. The project will not reduce congestion or increase capacity. The model shows capacity will be increased by 27%. Like one of our Councilmembers "I just don't get it." I don't understand how by adding a center turnlane in places and flower boxes we will add 5,000 vehicles to the parkway. The model says yes but common sense says no. The vehicles who use the center turn lane are already on the roadway so how do you add to the capacity? I guess I don’t have the “Vision” or maybe I just have the “Mob Mentality” suggested by Council Member Petitti, when I want common sense answers to my questions. Oh, I am not a member of a Mob. I am a Citizen who would like to be listened to and not be treated rudely. Council Member Cross inferred this is our first move to make Sammamish an Urban Center. By changing this Rural Road into an Urban Road takes us into the future. I would let him know that by spending over $45 million on a do little 12 year project is a step backward not a move forward. Why do we need to spend over $45 million on a project to make it look like Lake Washington Boulevard in Kirkland? We do not have the businesses or through streets to support the side traffic entering our parkway, like Lake Washington Boulevard does. The citizens of Sammamish do not want to spend over $10 million per mile and not improve congestion or increase the capacity of the roadway. Our Council members need to remember it is "Of the People, By the People and For the People". The city needs to do something with East Lake Sammamish Parkway. The citizens are concerned that this project, like most of the projects in Sammamish, will come in over budget and fail to meet our future needs. If we failed to build for the future we will have to redo the parkway in 12 years. This is after spending Millions of our Dollars which could have been spend more important projects. I still understand the issues facing our local government, and I ran to build community, not to leave a legacy. “Listen to our citizens and make sound common sense decisions. ”
I would like to thank the citizens of Sammamish who supported me during the election for the Sammamish City Council. We did not win the election, but the battle to keep Sammamish for its' Citizens is not over. It was the first time I ran for public office. I will run again and try to stop the out of control spending and lack of listening by our Sammamish City Council. I learned it is expensive to run for public office. I also learned many voters do not stay informed. We will win the next time. I want to hear from you and will listen to your ideas on how we can keep Sammamish the great place we all love to live.
I want to grow old here, ensure it remains a neighborly community. Sammamish will be a community serving all of its’ citizens. Sammamish will be a community where we raise our children in a safe and family environment.
Lets work together to help our City grow as a Community and not grow into an urban eyesore. I want to Serve Our Community. Thank You.
